Immerse yourself in Vietnam’s countryside scenery and activities: cycle to Cam Thanh and learn all about its traditional occupations.
Cam Thanh village used to be one of the fiercest battlefields in Vietnam during the war. Today, however, it is a peaceful village with the tradition of making coconut-made cottage. The cycling tour to the village will also be just as peaceful and harmonious as the village itself: you will traverse through the provincial roads: extensive rice paddy fields on both sides of the roads, numerous coconut trees and the daily agricultural activities of the locals.
Before hitting the road, you will visit a traditional rice paper-making family. Rice paper is one of Hoi An’s most famous dishes; it is eaten together with a variety of other dishes and seems simple, but making rice paper is an art to master its crunchiness, mouth-watering smell and distinct taste. Next, you will cycle to the village while enjoying the tranquillity of the rural roads. Upon arriving at Cam Thanh, the village’s signature coconut made cottages will come into sight. The locals are known for their ingenious pair of hands. They are good at both making cottages and furniture. Cam Thanh villagers are widely known for their coconut-made cottages, yet they are also skillfully put together various pieces of furniture from water coconuts and bamboo. Next, you will visit a family with a tradition of making fish sauce. This is the chance to learn how fish sauce is made from scratch using the old ways, something rare since everything nowadays is industrialized.
The water coconut palm is another unique feature of Cam Thanh. While the Southern Vietnamese use sampan (the local fishing boat), villagers here use basket boats. With 3 people per boat (including a local from the village), you will be drifting through the river and admire the 200-year-old water coconut palm on the river banks. Also, don’t be surprised when you hear your local companion randomly starts singing a folk song. It is the beauty of this place: rustic, honest, hospitable and friendly.
Take a break, recharge yourself with a delicious meal along with locals.
Continue on your trip by stopping at the shrimp lake. Cam Thanh is deemed as the “mini Southwest of Vietnam” (very famous for its rivers, lakes and floating markets), so after discovering the beauty of the river; don’t miss the chance to learn how people make a living out of it. Then, become a true fisherman - try to catch fish using their very net! You have seen and visit traditional activities in the village all day long, so why not become one villager yourself? This refreshing experience also marks the end of the exciting and educational journey.
